  4. Welcome to Net Watchman by The AG Group!  
  5.  
  6. The AG Group is the leading developer of powerful, graphical, intuitive Macintosh-based network management software.  Our mission is to debunk the myth that sophisticated network management tools are complex and expensive.

Net Watchman is our dynamic AppleTalk monitoring software that allows a network manager, administrator or Help Desk staff know immediately of any changes to their AppleTalk network, including zones, nodes or services changes, print status information, etc.  Using AppleTalk protocols, Net Watchman creates a list of all registered zones, bridges, nodes and services on your internetwork, regardless of the media to which devices are connected (Ethernet, LocalTalk or Token Ring media, remote connections, etc.).  The software then monitors these strategic points and warns the user of any disappearance or reappearance of these zones, nodes or services.  For any irregularity, an alarm is triggered (audible, visual or pager alarm) and the activity is logged for later retrieval.

This demo version of Net Watchman 2.1, our latest release of the software, retains most of the commercial product's functionality, but will execute for a maximum of 10 minutes.   The same information and status will be displayed as the normal product, but print and save functions have been removed from the demo while the log file remains.

  12. This release represents significant changes and improvements in the software, including: 
  13. •    Support For Multiple Pagers.  In addition to the global paging subscriber previously supported, service and node alerts may now be targeted at any paging account.  An unlimited number of such accounts is supported.

  15. •  Unique Sound Specifications For Each Alert.  Previously,  sounds were limited to one per node.  This new feature allows, for example, the name of each particular service to be announced.

  17. •  Repeating Node and Service Alerts.  This provides the ability to emit a sound or send a page repeatedly until an alert condition goes away.  This makes sound alerts more reliable, and permits effective paging at sites where pagers are turned off in the evening.

  19. • Specifation of Individual Pager Strings For Each Alert.  Previously, pager custom strings were limited to one per node.

  21. •  Enahnced Paging Messages.  Additional information is appended to pages for which only the custom string is specified.  Previously, it had been necessary to check the Event Details item to get the up or down status.

  23. •  Net Watchman 2.1 pages now distinguish between service down and node down conditions.

  25. •  Improved Page Logging.  To better help keep track of what pages have been sent from Net Watchman, all pages are logged to the event list.  If a page is not due to the "Limit Redundant Pages" checkbox in the preferences dialog, an entry is made in the log to this effect.

  27. •  Alert Listing Enhanced.  The alert listing provides more complete information about each alert, including the up/down status of each service (by displaying •), whether the alert monitors the up and/or down condition of the alert (by displaying "u" and/or "d"), whether it emits a sound (by displaying "s"), displays a message dialog (by displaying "m"), or pages (by displaying the page subscriber).  Service and node alerts are distinguished (by displaying "S").

  29. •  New Service Alarm Feature.   Alarms are now generated for each service when the node goes down, and the fact that the node went down is noted in the alarm information.

  31. •  New "Wild Card" Feature.   Net Watchman 2.1 uses a wild card feature that will recognize new Macintosh models more effectively.

  35. Getting Started
  36. Insert the demo floppy into your Macintosh's disk drive.  An icon in the form of a floppy disk will appear on your desktop.  Drag the floppy icon to your hard disk.  This will create a folder containing a copy of the diskette on your hard disk.  Eject the floppy by dragging it to the trash.

  38. Open the folder and select the file named "Net Watchman 2.1 Demo".  Then launch it either by double-clicking or by selecting the Open menu item, under the File menu.

Net Watchman will then display three dialogs.  Click the "New" button in the first two dialogs, which will create a settings file.  The third dialog asks which zones you wish to monitor.  Normally you should click the Select All, Add>>, and OK buttons.   Keep in mind that Net Watchman requires several seconds to initially scan each zone - you may choose to select just a few of the most interesting zones to monitor.

  42. The Zone Window
  43. The next window to appear is called the Zone Window.  This window contains a scrolling list containing an entry for each zone.  Monitored zones are flagged with a bell icon.  The three columns on the far right indicate that the zone is being monitored for "global" events: new nodes, new services, and changes in the avaibility of the zone itself.

  45. The Node Map, Node Alert, and Node Info Windows
  46. To see a zone's Macintoshs and other devices (referred to as nodes) select that zone and click the Node Map button.  You may further examine a particular node by double clicking on it.  If the zone is monitored, a "Node Alert" window will appear, allowing you to monitor individual services by selecting one or more services and clicking on the appropriate check boxes.  Use the popup menus to set the sounds emitted when an alert is processed.  There is also a popup to set the time interval between checks for that service.

  48. If you have a paging server available, paging will be fully functional.

  50. Try pressing the option key while double-clicking a node and you will see the node's service information presented in a "Node Info" window, which allows you to see more detailed information about the node itself, along with its individual services.

  52. The Lists Menu
  53. •  Use the "Event" menu item to see the log, which contains a list of all monitored items that have changed state.
  54. •  The "Alert" item displays a list of all monitored items, including, when appropriate, node name, service name, zone, and time interval.
  55. •  The "Network" item will ask you to supply a list of zones to scan, and then produce a list of all the services available in those zones.  The demo version can display several hundred services before running out of space in the list.
  56. •  "Find…" allows you to search for a service or node by name.  More options are available if the frontmost window is a Node Map.
  57. •  "Update Window" refreshes the frontmost window after querying the network.
  58. •  "Sort by Name" and "Sort by Net" control the order in which items are displayed in the Node Window.

  60. The Alerts Menu
  61. •  "By Service Class" allows you to monitor any type of service, regardless of the node in which that service resides.
  62. •  "Global" accesses the options for monitoring new nodes, the appearance of new service types, and changes in zone availability.
  63. •  "Disable Sounds" and "Disable Messages" allow you to temporarily disable sounds and messages.
  64. •  "Preferences" provides you with the ability to control a variety of default behaviors.  The most important of these is probably the timing parameters for Name Binding Protocol .  Reduce these numbers to make the Node Maps come up faster.  Increase them to reduce the number of false alarms.  Note that you must select one or more zones to specify the zone or zones whose timing parameters you are changing.
